Where the water comes from
The source sets the category. A water heater or supply leak is clean water. A floor drain or sewer backup is Category 3. Water seeping through a wall or under a door after heavy rain picks up soil on the way and is treated as contaminated. The crew identifies the source before deciding what can be dried and what comes out.
Finished lower levels
Carpet over a concrete slab, drywall on furred-out walls and a bathroom or bar are common downstairs. Wet pad comes up, drywall is cut a couple of feet above the water line so the cavity behind it can dry, and baseboards are pulled. Contents are moved to a dry room and inventoried with photos.
Drying concrete and below-grade walls
A slab gives up water slowly, so drying a lower level takes longer than a room upstairs. LGR dehumidifiers and air movers run with the area closed off, and the slab is checked with a meter until it matches a dry reference.
